Controversial Rushdie novel goes on stage in Germany

A stage production of a controversial novel by the award-winning author Salman Rushdie has opened in Germany. The Satanic Verses, published in 1988, led to a fatwa being imposed on Rushdie by the Iranian spiritual leader and he had to go into hiding under police protection.

The director of the theatre in Potsdam says the book is available in all libraries, the controversy was 20 years ago, and he thinks the country should take the risk of showing the play.

One translator of the book was stabbed to death in 1991 and another was seriously injured in a separate attack. An attempt was also made on the life of one of the publishers.

German police say there has been no direct threat relating to the stage production, but security has been put in place.
